Wijaya Residencies is pleased to present a new commission by the leading Balinese-British artist Sinta Tantra (b. 1979, New York) and her mural Statera (2019). Inspired by her Balinese heritage and traditions, Tantra’s art is a celebration of light and colour, drawn from the language of abstract geometry. While she works primarily as a painter, Tantra’s practice extends to public art, sculpture, and the creation of immersive environments. She is especially interested in how art functions outside the gallery—its place and placement in the everyday. In Latin, the word ‘statera’ translates as ‘balance’ or ‘a set of scales’. Tantra comments, “I am interested in how we strive to find balance in our lives. How to create a sense of calm and tranquillity, especially in a vast urban metropolis such as Jakarta? “ Statera envisages Tantra’s aspirations for Wijaya Residencies as a unique green space, cultivating balance, community, and shared connections. These core values are reflected in the colours: green represents a sustainable environment, while copper symbolises the red Indonesian soil or earth that supports us. Muted colours float in flat geometric forms—some heavier, some lighter—peacefully interconnecting within a neutral network. Motifs and lines form a constellation, reflecting the delicate balance we seek as individuals living in the city—our time at work, play and leisure, prompting us to question: What makes us balanced?
